The Story of “Akeem” - Human Map Project
Akeem is a forty-year-old Jamaican automotive retailer, who has a wife and two children, a boy and a girl. In his life, he has done many jobs including selling, taxi driving, and automotive retailing, all of which he did to salvage his family from poverty.
Born from a relatively poor and rural family, Akeem has always believed that persistent will can transform one’s life. He’s always had the desire to accumulate wealth because the standard of living that he experienced with his family was very low due to low income and poor environment. Despite such background, Akeem studied extremely hard in his secondary school and was able to study valuable industry technologies in his college. Starting from the early twenties, however, he began to experience primarily alcoholic addiction coupled with depression and anxiety because he lost direction in his life after the accident that took away the lives of his parents.
Still, he reminded himself at last of the promise that he gave himself to pursue success no matter what, to change the lives of his family. With such persistent will, he managed to overcome the addiction and psychological depression by developing healthy habits, such as exercising and journaling, to increase his tolerance to pain. With such a mental transformation, he finally put his mind back on his goal and started to actively pursue it, meeting people and switching professions to land in car retailing. Because he showed great success in this job, he was able to escape from low income and poverty and went as far as to form his new family at the age of thirty.
In conclusion, Akeem believes that persistent will is paramount to change one’s life positively. He attested that the active reminding of goals and healthy habits that endow the physical and mental stamina could put a person on a lie of productivity and ultimately success. From his inspiring life, we can learn that being able to stay determined and take actions could not only lead one to a successful path but also make people mentally strong and resilient at the same time.
