“Philosophy Inspires Humanity”

“Philosophy inspires humanity.” Mencius deemed human nature good, but only through persistent meditation and practice, could he truly awake his humanity.

Let’s face it, what genuinely renders meaning in life? Had he retained fortune, talent, repute, but lost his conscience, companion, and covenant, could he proudly say his life unexchangable? Written in Nature’s tablet, our nature demands that we love each other. It is what the monster in Frankenstein longed for, what the murderer in Crime and Punishment needed, and what eighteen years of myself discovered to be the utmost truth.

Love endows humans with greater meaning, purpose, and happiness. Love is the beginning of humanity, and humanity is the completion of love. Though we love naturally, no one could from the beginning love with patience, integrity, and commitment. It requires deep moral reflection to attain such humanity, spiritual growth, and moral equipment.

Philosophy is like learning how to let go of your first love. Though painful it may be, you must learn how to overcome your past shortcomings to become someone who is more mature and reliable. By doing so, you are not only peeling the layers of the pain but also turning into someone who can reciprocate love properly.

Philosophy is the road to consummate love through humanity. My ultimate goal, therefore, is to become a philosophical counselor who aids people with mental and existential wellbeing by mixing the tenets of philosophy and psychology. By doing so, I can explore the profundity of thoughts and promote holistic therapeutic approach.

Unfortunately, modern world is full of mental agonies. My country Korea, for example, has the highest suicide rate among all OECD countries. In surface, people are diagnosed with stress, anxiety, addiction, and attention deficit. However, the truth is more complex, as each of them has their unique and profound narratives that characterize their psyches. Thus, philosophy could answer the need of a deeper and more sophisticated approach.
